Why Is the Jeep® Wrangler So Popular? | Decatur, IN
If there was ever a vehicle that has earned the title of “iconic,” it is the Jeep® Wrangler. Even people who say they don’t know anything about cars know what a Wrangler is. It has long been heralded as the best off-road vehicle available and each year continues to be the brand’s best-selling model. What makes the Wrangler so popular?
The Wrangler’s history dates back to World War II and the capable Willys MB vehicle that the United States Army commissioned for the fight. The rugged MB quickly earned the nickname of Jeep®, however, no one is quite sure where it came from.
After the war, soldiers quickly bought up the surplus vehicles and Willys began to produce civilian models. In 1970, American Motors Company (AMC) bought the Jeep® brand and released the first Wrangler in 1987 (YJ). Chrysler then acquired AMC and eventually released the TJ and JK models. Today, the Jeep® brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the latest JL model.
Even after more than 75 years, the basic styling cues have stayed mostly the same. Every Wrangler model has worn the 7-slot grille, had flat fenders and hood, comes with removable doors, and has a fold-down windshield. With the exception of a few model years, the headlights have also stayed round.
Thanks to its rugged design, the Wrangler can conquer terrain that most other vehicles cannot. Its short wheelbase, excellent ground clearance, and advanced four-wheel-drive design opens up the world. As for its on-road manners, those have improved dramatically over the years making the Wrangler a great daily driver, too.
Another great reason to love the Wrangler is because you can add a countless number of aftermarket parts and enhancements to make it look and perform exactly the way you want it to.
